Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a new pathway supporting the delivery of 21st century learning. It is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where students use their personally owned mobile devices to access the department’s IT network.

Device selection

Before acquiring a device to use at school the parent or caregiver and student should be aware of the school’s specification of appropriate device type, operating system requirements and software. These specifications can be found in the BYOD Laptop Handbook.

Warranty & Accidental Damage Protection

Laptops are expensive technical devices and they do break down and can be damaged, especially in the hands of teenagers. It is vital to ensure a fast turnaround for repairs when the need arises.

We highly recommend every device has Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance with onsite warranty. You may have the option of adding ADP to your home and contents insurance policy. However, be sure that it covers the device 24/7 and while away from your home.

All vendors listed on Vendor Portal section below, offer next business day onsite warranty and accidental damage protection. However this option needs to be added to the device during checkout.  It is worthwhile to know the warranty period and exactly what is covered as this will vary between vendors.

Virus Protection

Every device must have active anti-virus software installed. Windows Defender or a third-party software product such as MacAfee or AVG is recommended. Devices without anti-virus protection will not be allowed to access the school network.

Please Note – Trend Micro Anti-Virus currently causes connectivity issues on department networks, and as such you will not be able to connect to the school netowrk.  Do not purchase this software for your device.

Technical Support

The school will continue to run an IT help desk that will offer level one support for the student owned devices. However, warranty, security, insurance and maintenance will be something the parent will need to discuss with the vendor when the device is purchased. Advice about this will come out with the minimum device specifications. The installation of an Anti-virus software is acompulsory requirement of connecting the BYOD to the school network solution.  Recommended Anti-virus solutions include:  Norton/Symantec (DETE offers a 3 year x $9.99 offer) or Microsoft Defender.  If a solution is not detected the ‘on-boarding’ process will cease the connection to the school network.
