Student Support Services at Wellington Point State High School

Chaplaincy	SU Queensland Chaplains or "chappies" provide spiritual and emotional support to school communities. They are in the business of prevention and support: helping students find better ways to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression, and anxiety. They provide a listening ear and caring presence for children and young people in crisis, and those who just need a friend.
Student Services	Jeanette Laurie - Head of Department - Student Services Wellington Point recognises the strong association between safety, wellbeing and learning. Our student service team promote student wellbeing, safety and positive relationships so that students can reach their full potential.
Head of Year	Each year level has a designated Head of Year. The Head of Year is a key leadership role within our School. The main focus of this role is the pastoral care of students within the year group . They work with staff, families and the student to bring about improved outcomes for students wellbeing, as wellbeing and learning are intrinsically linked.
BASE - Afterschool tutoring	BASE happens every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 2:45 to 3:45pm in the school library and is run by teaching staff who volunteer their time to support students across faculty subjects. This program offers afterschool tutoring, homework support and consolidation and support of the learning taking place in the classroom. Our Student Academic Leaders also support Junior Students with their work. This is an effective way for students to engage with homework, assignment or tutoring activities with school staff, building positive relationships and instilling the love of learning. Students attendance at BASE is monitored and positive learning behaviours recorded. There is a high standard of behaviour expected during this time and parent contact is made for any student that is not engaging effectively. Students are also offered to share afternoon tea as a brain break consisting of sandwiches and fruit, this initiative is supported through the School Chaplaincy Program.
Special Education Program (SEP)	Brittany Kennedy - Head of Special Education Services Wellington Point State High's special education program is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of students with disability to access, participate and achieve at school. The SEP offers individual learning plans for students with verified disabilities, which may include full inclusion, mainstream support, small group teaching or specialist teaching, all at a student’s individual level which may be detailed in their ICP (individual curriculum plan). Senior students may also be offered school based traineeships with extra support and may be eligible to participate in the QCIA (Qld Certificate of Individual Education) to exit at year 12. Industry Liaison Officer	Rosemarie Arthars The Industry Liaison Officer supports students who are participating in Nationally Recognised Vocational Educational and Training courses through TAFE Brisbane, other private Registered Training Organisations and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships. She also organises work experience and the necessary legal paperwork.
Guidance Officers	Sue Donnelly - Junior Secondary Guidance Officer Jan Drury - Senior Secondary Guidance Officer Guidance Officers identify factors that can interfere or disrupt effective learning, wellbeing and development, and plan or assist in planning interventions or programs that can help students achieve positive outcomes. Guidance Officers may work directly with the student or with the student's teachers, support personnel, family, other specialists, or professionals from other agencies depending on the issues to be resolved and the age of the student. Depending on the student's age, a range of issues may be supported by Guidance Officers including personal and social development, mental health, diverse learning styles and needs, and educational and career pathways. > providing guidance and counselling services to students and their families > performing case management and referral services to optimise students' access and engagement in education performing case management and referral services to optimise students' access and engagement in education > preparing and implementing professional and personal skill development programs for administrators, teachers and parents > planning or assisting in planning support programs that can help students achieve positive outcomes > identifying factors that can be barriers to the learning and development of students > supporting the personal and social development of students > providing advice about education and career pathways.
Tracking Officers	The Tracking Officer works with the Senior and Junior Schooling Teams to identify the barriers that prevent students from achieving desired learning outcomes e.g. - attendance, participation, work ethic, non-submission of assessment, mental health or other home/personal issues. To ensure every year 12 student obtains a Queensland Certificate of Education by working with students to overcome obstacles, setting and achieving goals. To build and maintain close relationships with students, staff and parents and where necessary and appropriate, provide social/emotional support to students and refer on to other support services.
Youth Health Nurse	Youth health nurses work with school communities on a range of issues that can affect the health and wellbeing of young people and the school community as a whole. You can talk to your youth health nurse about a range of issues, such as: > healthy eating and exercise > healthy skin > relationships > personal or family problems > sexual health > smoking, alcohol and other drugs > growth and development
